40 Days with Still: Day 36, March 30

Winner offers the "middle tint" as another metaphor for faithfulness, that of everyday, ordinary tasks: churchgoing, prayer, and such--action that will never get noticed and don't sing of the extraordinary but that make up the majority of your spiritual life. Is it helpful to picture spiritual acts that otherwise feel mundane in this way? What tasks would you put in the "middle tint" category, and how can you view them in a new light?

This really resonated with me. So much of what happens at church is that "middle tint," people who give so selflessly of their time, their energies. And they don't have to! There are times when I hate to ask because we're all so busy. Yet I know from my own experience that some of those "middle tint" places are the places that most welcome growth and movement to a deeper place.

I remember teaching Sunday School to 3rd graders when I first returned to the church. I didn't know what I was doing and wasn't sure why I was getting up so early (on my day off!) to do it, but it became something that was life giving, that changed how I saw not only myself, but my understanding of my relationship to both God and the community.
