Being alone and being lonely should be distinguished.

In being alone, within our solitude, we are free from the clutter of the outside world allowing us to focus on things other than ourselves.

Being lonely keeps the focus of life on us. When I feel lonely, I try to apply a discerning eye to myself to find the cause. After reflection, I usually realize that the feeling of loneliness, for me, is a mirage...a distraction from those things in life that truly matter.

I most certainly do not propose that there isn't loneliness in the world. I understand that through circumstances, well beyond a person's control, they are lonely. It is our duty, as Christians, to reach out and to be a friend to the friendless.

I cherish time alone - quiet solitude when I think about things and spend time being in the presence of God. Time of refreshment.

Loneliness is another thing. I have experienced loneliness even when in the midst of people and activity. It is immobilizing and demoralizing. It was dark and terrible time and I hope I never experience it again.

Michael I really like your differentiation.
